OGUK Medical: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re planning to work offshore in the oil and gas industry, there’s one crucial step you can’t skip: the OGUK Medical examination. This medical assessment is designed to ensure you are physically and mentally fit to work in the often challenging and remote conditions of offshore installations. Whether you’re a first-time applicant or renewing your certificate, understanding the process can help you prepare with confidence.

What is an OGUK Medical?

The OGUK Medical—formerly known as the UKOOA Medical—is the industry standard health assessment required for anyone working offshore in the UK sector of the oil and gas industry. It’s named after Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), the organisation responsible for setting these medical guidelines.

The goal is to make sure offshore workers can safely carry out their duties without risking their own health or the safety of others.

Who Needs It?

You’ll need an OGUK Medical if you:

  • Work on an offshore oil or gas platform in UK waters.

  • Are employed in a role that requires offshore travel.

  • Are a diver or involved in safety-critical offshore operations.

What Does the Medical Involve?

The OGUK Medical is a thorough check-up carried out by an OEUK-approved doctor. The standard assessment includes:

  1. Medical History Review – Discussion of your past and present health conditions.

  2. Physical Examination – Checking height, weight, and BMI.

  3. Vision Test – Assessing eyesight and colour vision.

  4. Hearing Test – Ensuring safe communication offshore.

  5. Blood Pressure Check – Detecting hypertension or cardiovascular risks.

  6. Urinalysis – Screening for diabetes or kidney issues.

  7. General Health Assessment – Examining respiratory, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal health.

How Long is it Valid?

  • Standard OGUK Medical certificates are valid for two years.

  • For individuals with certain medical conditions, the certificate may be issued for less than two years to allow for more frequent monitoring.

Why is it Important?

Offshore work environments can be remote, physically demanding, and high-risk. The OGUK Medical ensures:

  • Workers can respond effectively in emergencies.

  • Pre-existing health issues won’t be aggravated by offshore conditions.

  • The overall safety of the crew and operations.
